SWK district heating for 1.FC Kaiserslautern
That’s what we call a successful double pass between SWK Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern Versorgungs-AG, WVE GmbH and FCK. Together, we will ensure that the heating at the Betze runs reliably and in an environmentally friendly manner in the future.

At the Betze, FCK usually sets the pace as the home team. Shortly before the start of the season, it was us – together with WVE GmbH. Together with other local players, we worked in record time on the district heating supply for the Fritz Walter Stadium. The work could not be allowed to jeopardize match operations under any circumstances. A tight schedule determined the major project.
Together from the region for the region

Everyone involved acted true to Fritz Walter’s legendary motto: “The key to success is camaraderie and the will to give everything for each other.” The cooperation was excellent. The coordination between everyone involved was pragmatic and solution-oriented. We know and understand each other. That was crucial.
Analysis, tactics briefing and out onto the pitch!
We at SWK initially carried out several studies. We examined various energy supply options. Then the stadium company opted for district heating. It is the most economical and sustainable energy source. This was the starting signal for the work. The old heating system in the stadium urgently needed to be replaced. It could no longer be operated economically or sustainably. It had also become prone to faults over the years.
Work has been going on in the background at the construction site since March 2024. First, a fixed connection was laid for the mobile heating system and the necessary pipework was carried out inside the building. SWK worked hand in hand with WVE GmbH. The latter is responsible for distributing the district heating in the stadium.

At the start of the summer break, we at SWK laid 50 meters of main pipe from the existing district heating network. We supply the required heat from Hegelstraße in the direction of the stadium.
The hot Betze swallows a lot of energy!
Up to 2,000 kilowatt hours are generated on home match days. After optimizing the heating system, it will still be up to 1,500 kilowatt hours at peak times. The rest of the time, the system manages with around a third of this output. That is still a large amount. Even during non-match periods, the stadium consumes 50 times as much heat as a detached house.
It was a feat of strength that the work in the outdoor area was completed in time for the anniversary game. With its rocky ground, the Betzenberg is a real bastion! After the pipeline work, we extended the inside of the transfer station. The six by nine meter building was artistically designed by graffiti artist Daniel Ferino, Maltag. With its devilish motif, it fits in perfectly with the Betze.
Absolutely first class!
District heating will flow into the Fritz Walter Stadium at the end of 2025. The close cooperation between the stadium company, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and the other partners is going extremely well. The ambitious goal is firmly in sight.
The representatives of the SWK Group are certain: “As a team, we are playing in the premier league as an energy partner for the Palatinate. We ensure a sustainable and smart district heating supply. With digital and intelligent control of the system, we are creating an efficient infrastructure that will make the decisive difference in the long term. If this ultimately contributes even a small part to the success of our beloved FCK, we will all be delighted.”
